Since the tools exist to bring ranged defender's defense power to 0, and melee defenders are bad against ranged attackers, why would you ever use melee soldiers to attack? I suppose you would want them on later waves of the attack so that if their courtyard is 100% ranged you don't get completely destroyed, but at least when clearing their troops on the walls, is there any point to having melee attackers?
Yes, for example to put on middle for pvp, also can sometimes put one wave melee on flanks as theoretically that's good for clearing ranged/slits defenses.

You can always reduce ranged defense to zero by using at most 37 sws (or 38, don't feel like doing the math). However if they do, say, 70m 30r all slits while their ranged power will be completely negated on sw waves not all the ranged troops will die and some will survive. The ones that survive sw waves do fairly well against ranged/boulder waves, but fair less well against melee/boulder waves. So if they do a ranged and slit defense the waves that will do most damage against them will be the sw waves and melee wave.
That is my understanding of it anyway, and I do pretty good on most attacks.

Because after the wall, you don't want to have only ranged attackers going up against a bunch of ranged defenders in the courtyard.
