why are might points so important to top alliances?

When you have MPs it means that you have other things that do matter a lot, like troops, titles and better castles. Points are a way to know if you have those things.

MPs don't define how strong a player is though. Just a guideline and makes them more scary. Say they have 21 super commanders but only use 5 at a time when they play, thats about 160,000 MPs they aren't actually using. If a player doesn't have 5th or 6th wave their attacks will be weak too so they are easier to defend.

MP represents the precise "strength" of someone's account—it doesn't necessarily reflect influence, skill, or experience. What it does do is show that the player likely has the capabilities to do some damage. As a top alliance, it's usually beneficial if others think you can do some damage.
Obviously, there are other, less superficial factors, but might points represents the "physical" power of the alliance and its players.
