If you don't have very many troops at the end of the battle you won't get much aqua.  It doesn't matter if you didn't send very many, or whether you sent a lot and lost a lot then number of troops you have at the end of the battle has a large effect on how much aqua you get.  Also the type of troop you have has an effect because different troops have different loot capacities.
