hello, im new here an appreciate any advice from the vets!
i started doing the winter pelt event, and after attacking for several hours only gained about 600 pelts.
How can I possibly reach the 10,000 or 15,000 pelt mark within 6 days?
i have 3 commanders attacking nonstop and i collect 65 pelt per attack approx.
am i wasting my time?

It is easier if you buy the look item for your commander. Look for people who have a lot of pelts. The sooner you get your points, the easier it will be in the long run.

Well u can wait 3-4 days too and targets will have more pelts too becouse every night u too and all others get 35% more pelts automaticly for next day and next day to till the event ends, so 7 danys u get every day 35% of your daily amount. Last 2 days u can buy one or two look items for commanders and u can get 600-700 per attack jsut attacking inactive people that have petls stacked in castles, if u understadn what i´m saying.

Actually it makes little difference whether you get pelts on the first day or the last. You might get fewer on the first day, but remember that those are multiplied by 1.35 every day thereafter. I agree that buying the "look" item is probably the only way you are going to get the 80K pelts for the top reward (especially as people are now holding more and more defenders in their main due to increased food production and storage capacity, so it is harder to find targets), but I suggest spending some time every day picking up pelts if you are hoping to reach the higher level prizes. If you don't do that there is always a chance someone else will be picking off the same targets and getting pelts before you do.

What is actually more useful and interesting about the event is testing out attacking blind, trying different commanders and attack layouts on different casts. The beauty is you can pick targets you know are strong, send an attack on them, and then send another with a different setup on the same target to see which is more effective. Get strong players in other alliances to hit you too to test different defence setups, and practice responding to an incoming attack - all great practice. And it doesn't cost you anything other than a few coins, a feather, and a bit of your time. See the event as more than just winning pelts and a few other bits and pieces and you will enjoy it a lot more.

Yea agree with that of course, there are many tactics and aproaches to reach the top reward, and its great chance to train yourself in PvP. By doing that getting nice items (look, coms casts etc) is really great, especially these new rewards on winters pray give wonderful commander and cast pieces, new deco is beautiful too.

I followed the general advice here and got the top prizes! I collected 89,000 pelts.
I bought the hunting knife for two commanders on the last day.

The big problem is with this event is firstly the prizes are pointless, to anyone reasonably well developed so i dont really know anyone that plays the event.

Yes it can have its uses for PVP training in a risk / cost free way. But only in a pretty limited way, because firstly for most active players you cant beat their standing defense with a single hit no matter how good an attack you send. But mainly so one actually ever bothers to defend these attacks so its value towards real PVP is somewhat limited. Its very rare that the setup ever changes, and in real pvp it changes almost all the time. also there is pretty much never support. so there is a world of difference in hitting say 7k defenders and a static wall def, to hitting 100k defenders and tooling that has changed after you launched the attack.

As has been stated above the only real way to do anything in this event is to avoid the real players and farm the dead players / shells. A very sad insight into the health of our game when GGE is making events that are effectivly played by farming shells / dead accounts.
