Do you mean castleguards? You can only reach maximum level and unlock new worlds (winter/dessert/storm/fire) ...

1. Upgrade your Estate
2. Enter the other Kingdoms
3. Capture a Capital of Power (Metropolis, Capital)

the only ways you can do that is by capturing outposts, entering outers and capturing metropolises or capitals.

Storm isn't so temp since you can still equip it whether you're there or not.
