If you acquire tokens from realm from purchases will these return to your main at the end, or must they be used in realms

By 'realms' do you mean Beyond the Horizon? If you do, then the answer is that no, these will not come back to your MC.

Only rubies purchased in the Outer Realms and Beyond the Horizon events will be returned to your main account come the end of the event.

Construction and Upgrade Tokens are the primary end of event rewards in the Outer Realms event, and can be won consistently from there.
