What unit will beat spears, swords, bows, and crossbows.

well if you look at the unit description, it tells you what the unit is more effective against and also only use attack units to attack.

Spears - go with crossbows or heavy crossbows.
Swordsman - no difference in any attacker.
Bowman - go with maceman or two handed swordman.
Crossbowman - go with crossbowman or heavy crossbowman

Agreed, but with swordsman is not true, swordsman despite they are melee defenders, the best soldiers to beat them are the Two handed Swords or Veteran Macemans

Defense of swordsman is equal against both melee and ranged attackers. Instead even if you go for every single defense powers than he better against melee attackers(38 defense power) than ranged ones (36 defense powers)

Why you keep saying that, when is not true?

Two handed swordman 109 attack power vs. 38 melee defense (Swordsman) =(+71 for the attacker)
Heavy Crossbowman 092 attack power vs 36 Ranged defense (Swordsman) = (+56 for the attacker)

you loot by winning a battle after which your surviving troops bring back some resources.

You could beat spear with ranged. You could beat bowman with melee.

bowman- any melee
maceman- any melee
crossbowman- any ranged
swordsman- any melee/ ranged
