i like this idea! easy gold!I bought a hundred shadow macemen, and personally, I think they are amazing!
Use them too attack robber barons.
They dont need commanders, so I send out 25 attacks of four men, at level 1 rbc's. They cost nothing to send, and eat nothing, so its win win in my opinion. Plus I completed my second travelling knights quest in two rounds of attacks at the level 1 rbcs.
I wouldnt use them against other players though, as they are expensive to buy, plus you have to buy all their tools with rubies. Also, they cannot spy on people. So you would have to spy from your own castle. If you get caught, the opponent is going to know who is likely to be the owner of the shadows attacking them.

shadow troops cost rubies to purchase, but they cost no gold to use.

Some people have been giving false information (e.g. "they have different stats"), so I thought I would post all the correct information on this post.
The shadow mercenary camp will come to your main castle in each kingdom on occasion. This is an event, like the travelling knights or the armourer. From the shadow mercenary camp, you can buy shadow soldiers and shadow tools. These soldiers or tools have the exact same statistics as their non-shadow equivalent (e.g. shadow mace is the same as a maceman), apart from one thing: food consumption. Shadow soldiers do not consume food.
Shadow soldiers and tools are sent in seperate attacks. To attack a player with a shadow army, click on the castle you want to attack and press the "S" button. Set up your attack like normal. The person who is getting attacked will not know that you are the one attacking them: this is the main point. Whether you win or lose the battle, the player will not know who has attacked them. You can also attack members of your own alliance with a shadow army, if you want to.
Shadow tools and soldiers cost rubies. Soldiers are bought in packs of 10 for either 300 rubies (mace + crossbow) or 800 rubies (rogue + felon). Tools can be bought individually, and cost between 12 and 18 rubies each.
You can complete 1 achievement through this: if you buy anything (including tools) from the shadow mercenary camp, you will get "Tough Measures" and 20 achievement points.

They come from a shadow camp, it appears randomly on the map near the target and then vanishes again.

No, you get no honour or glory, but you can lose honour if your target is a lot weaker than you.

They are good because:
- They are troops which don't consume food, and who wouldn't want another ~1K troops without worrying about another 4000 (or 2400 with bakery lvl 4) food consumption?
- The victim does not know who attacked them
- They don't take any time to recruit
- They don't use a commander so you can send them all out to attack lvl 1 RBCs (4 per baron) with no losses if you want
- You can attack your alliance members (if you like backstabbing)

One question:
Do they act as defenders when someone is attacking, or are they invisible until you commence an attack on someone?

They don't defend. They aren't there unless you launch an attack or look at your troops overview.

If your castle is attacked, will your own shadow mercenaries help to defend the castle, and maybe get killed?

They only help to attack only, no defend
it is usually used to raise far distance rbc from lower level to higher level
the army movement is not counted into your regulary movement
e.g. u can allow to send 6 army, no more army as no commander
with shadow army, u can send 6 regulary army + unlimited shadow army < no commander required>
u can raise rbc from level 1 to "level 5-2 victory to level 6" with shadow macemen w/o loss < u can collect resource and coins with those shadow army >
u can raise rbc from "level 5-2 victory to level 6" further higher level with other shadow sodliers w/o loss
with rbc involve loss, send your regularly army to farm < the rbc level is sufficient high, so u get net profit from them [ lower level rbc, u send sodlier to farm raise rbc level, u will get loss in coins becos u pay more in journey to hit them ] >

that is "Missing troop" bug
they a still trying to fix it ?
i lost 4 shadow army last night....they a bought by rubies which i spend my real world $$ to buy
there is nothing u can do, u cannot stop it
but u can report it to "support"
to avoid some bug, do not leave any army to hit and return home when u offline
some bug does occur even u a online... my ally member has never get any 1 of his army back from the begin of playing this game (he play at least 1.5 month) , take care
