I have 400+ Veteran maceman in my main castle... why don't these count towards last requirement?

Basically, because the game makers don't want them to. Tough luck, you're just going to have to recruit some two-handers to complete this.

Still a higher melee unit than maceman. *sigh... suppose they can always be sacrificed to the barons

make swordsman, they are cheap (at high levels) and train faster than normal macemen
