i don't know what they mean by research veteran spearman, bowman, maceman, and crossbowman. do i actually go online and look??

You research them from a research tower you unlock at level 39. You can get more information on this topic elsewhere in the forums. One person has almost a complete wiki on the forums regarding research towers!

When you get to level 39, you unlock the research tower. One of the features is that you can replace certain troops with veteran equivalents e.g. veteran spearmen. They cost more and consume more food, but have much better stats.
