on of my alliance members won a battle, but his 20 surviving troops disappeared into thin air and never returned to his castle. Any ideas what might cause ths to happen?

There seem to have been a few cases of this happening. Perhaps it's a glitch, that or you didn't pay close enough attention. XD I'm going for the glitch thing

THat happened to me 2x also, very odd.

Happened to me too
