Hello
Wondering if someone can explain what went wrong. I spied another player and received my report back. The report stated that he had 58 military units and 30 farmers. I sent 2 waves of units with tools and lost the battle. I sent 87 units. Which probably was to low. When I got the report it stated that he had actually 117 units. I understand that troops can be made and moved to places, but not understanding the huge difference. The report also only has question marks for his units. I can't see what I really fought against. He also had an open tower.
Hope someone can explain the huge difference and the incomplete report?
I hope this is where I am to post this.
Thank you

I am going to give you an example if you spy the main castle of "A" and you see 200 troops, and you send the attack, anything will happen between the time of the espionage and the time the attack hits, someone could attack him, he could ask for support, he could move the troops between castles, and also the % of accuraccy of the espionage can give you a margin of error
When you lose a battle you will see "???" in the defender's side because you don't know which troops and tools he had because none of your soldiers survived...

Thank you
I assumed the report was decent because it had not returned with questions marks. I realize I should have sent more after. I didn't know that when you lose all your men you get question marks in return. Still learning how to set up battles and which men will defeat which. I will keep reading.

Espionage doesn't always work well, especially if you leave a long time between spying and attacking. Troops move around a lot.
For instance, if you had spied on my main castle yesterday morning, you might have seen 250 strong defenders. Yesterday evening, I moved them all to my outpost to join my other defenders so I could defend an attack. (I'm not saying whether or not I moved them back in case anyone gets any clever ideas about attacking me.)
If you had spied on my main castle 3 days ago, with a decent (but not 100%) accuracy, you might have seen 500 troops marked with an "unknown" and thought they were defenders. In actual fact, they were 250 veteran macemen and 250 veteran crossbowmen. This actually happened to one player - they attacked me, thinking I had a decent defence and hoping to get glory, and won by miles because 500 of my troops were attackers (and they were actually on their way to an attack when the battle came).
