If you want an alliance with your friend without making one, you will need to join one made by someone else. Also, making an alliance costs only 375 rubies if I remember correctly.

You do remember correctly - it costs 375 rubies, some resources and maybe some coins.

Alliance-wise, you have a few options:

1. Join an alliance already created. You should either ask for an invite or talk to the leader and get him to send you an invite. Unfortunately, it is quite hard to find a good alliance that will accept you. Even if you can get into a good alliance, you will probably not have much power, but you might get some people to beat up anyone who attacks you (and then the victims will complain and maybe even swear at you).

2. Make your own alliance. There is a small cost mentioned above. You will probably suffer recruiting new players, and any players you manage to recruit are probably low levels who turn to ruins very quickly after joining the alliance.

3. Remain alone, with no alliance, and suffer severely in most aspects: resources, defence troops, speed of attack, speed of market barrows, amount of loot and even psychological fear (from the player who doesn't want to attack the big Death Rider player).

Bear in mind that I'm a pessimist - all 3 of these choices probably sound terrible. But unless you are a high level, it's not going to be easy.
