i was just wondering what size defense i should have at my main castle ?

This is arguable - it depends on your strategy. I would say that anything over 200 total defenders (longbow and halberdiers) are okay.

but i have seen other threads where people say that's a really small defense .

Well, it depends on your level and strategy. 200 is just what I think is a decent defense. I survived at that level with less. Level 60s can have thousands of veteran defenders.

i try to play defensively and hope to be attacked to get my glory. I'm nearly duke but lately i haven't been able to defend attacks .

I would say about the same - 200 2HS and HCB.
