Topic: [76695] Defenses - seting the type of unit

[-76695] Heimdall3 [None] :: Sept. 6, 2012, 2:31 a.m.
Hello everybody,
I have played this game for months last year, and now I came back
Several things have chamged but I am quite well adapted
There is, tough, a very strange thing happening...
At the defenses window... I am sure I could change the priority type of unit (it was an icon showing three colorfull helmets at the top right, near the exclamation point at the defenses window) Now, this icon does not appear anymore for me...
It is a main drawback... for example, I have both archers (defenders) and a lot of crossbowmen (attackers) at the castle. If I set the percentage of defenders, lets say, 70% of archers and 30% of short distance, I would like my defenders at the gate would be, for example, 15 spearmen and 35 archers... but it happens that I have 15 spearmen, 20 crossbowmen and 15 archers (because of the proportion of archers/crossbowmen, both are ranged). During the day, I can send the crossbowmen out to attack, so thearchers stay at the defense... but when I am going to sleep... the crossbowmen stay defending.. I dont want they there... last year, changing the priority type at the "helmet icon" I could manage this situation, now I cannot anymore...
Thanks since now for the help.
Heimdall,
Australian1.

Can someone help me please?
What happened to the priority type of units, at the defenses screen... (the icon with three colorfull helmets that does not exists for me anymore)?

I think they just changed the way you do it. Go to defenses, then the wall where you want to change the defense set-up. Above the slots for tools is a little icon with a sword crossed over a quiver. If you hover your mouse over the top it should say Melee/ranged soldiers ratio. That must have replaced the old helmet system (I started too late to see that).

You need to have enough defense units in order to fill the maximum unit count that can be placed on your castle walls as to avoid any attack units (crossbowmen) in being on the walls. The system priorities defensive units over offensive units on top of the castle wall, it only puts offensive units on top of the walls if there is room available due to insufficient defensive units to occupy the space.

I think he knows that already and he prefers the old system. I myself (having started playing just last month) have an issue with the melee/ranged ratio system for the defenders. For example, if you have a mix of archers and crossbows and you have 2H swordsmen attacking your castle... even if have tons of archers that are best on defense the crossbowmen will still insist to be part of the cast :D since both are ranged... so if you have limited space on the wall you would want your highest powered defender (archer) doing the defending and not the powerful attacker moonlighting :D as defender (crossbowmen).

I think what he must do is let them jog thru the night sending his tons of crossbowmen pounding on some level 1 RBC about { sleep time / 2 } hours away... Just pray you won't be hit by the MISSING TROOPS BUG....:D

But aren't ALL UNITS defense units too? ALL UNITS can be attackers too... It's just that certain units have certain strengths (as offense or defense)... just as in the theater certain performers are good at singing or dancing or both to some degree... ;)

Thanks everybody...
But I am still in trouble...
There is not a "new" or an "old" system.
Some months ago we have both possibilitiies (adjust the ratio melee/ranged, and also the priority type). Today, the priority type adjustment seems to be missing...

What you´ve said is correct Stinson, but I am still worried about the missing "colorfull helmets"...

B.Stinson made the point. I experienced this myself and the solution is to change the ratio in both sides if the no. of defenders is not enough to fill the walls. ex. if you make 70% ranged and 30% melee on left side, you have to change the configuration on right side to 30% ranged.

Yeeaah, that analogy is completely void. There is no unit in the game that is good at attacking and defending (don't bother mentioning Swordsmen...). Units can be fitted in four categories: Offensive Melee unit, Defensive Melee unit, Offensive Range unit, Defensive Range unit or alternatively simplified into the two categories of Defensive units and Offensive units. Sure, you could theoretically put a Two-Handed Swordsmen or a Heavy Crossbowmen in defense but at the same time they would lose in a 1 on 1 battle against a Macemen, a level 1 barracks unit...

The point that I'm getting at is that the amount of strength is so absurdly one-sided in either defense or offense that in every case a unit proves to be futile in one of the elements (or in the case of the Swordsmen crap in both) so its almost worthless to put a offensive unit in defense and visa versa.
