suppose i am going to attack a castle where, there are no defenders but only attackers are present, say macemen. During the attack, they will try to defend the castle and will the units which are effective against melee defenders becomes effective here also?

It's all about the defender's stats. Just look them up in the recruitment menu. For example, two-handed swords have 19 defense against melee attackers, and only 5 defense against ranged attackers. Obviously, you should ranged against them.

You're oversimplifying. Macemen/crossbowmen aren't technically defenders even though robber barons use them as defenders sometimes. In fact, ranged attackers do better against defending crossbowmen than melee attackers. I just attacked level 10 (3 to level 11) RBCs. Their defenses are all crossbowmen. When I attacked with veteran crossbowmen I lost 1, with veteran macemen I lost 3.

I also lost 70 vet. crossbowmen at RBC 19(2), which has a massive macemen army. Apparently you only lose 5 melee soldiers if you do it correctly. http://en.board.goodgamestudios.com/empire/showthread.php?13197-How-to-attack-300-macemen&p=118738&viewfull=1#post118738

Swordsmen are all purpose, but they are more suited for defending than attacking. Crossbowman would be ideal against swordsmen than mace men. Also tools can be used to decrease the enemies defenses, the more tools you have, the less men you are likely to lose.

Uhh... I think we need a bit more info, because some of the advice that I could give will only apply in certain situations:

1. Don't use offensive soldiers in defence
2. Espionage a castle before attacking it
3. Use tools to counter the wall/gate bonuses and martyr waves or more tools to counter defence tools
4. Send more soldiers
5. Attack the weakest 2 flanks and fight the strongest in the keep
6. Send in melee soldiers against ranged and ranged against melee
7. In later waves, send in soldiers based on the enemy that will be in the keep
etc.
