I never much thought about these two; I maxed out my taverns just so I could scout for targets quicker. Then I ran across one player we will call "Jerk" Jerk decided to start attacking the smaller members of my alliancem beating on them once a day. My second in command and I acted to stop this and did quite well, If I say so myself: We wiped all his troops over 12 hours and siad we would leave him alone if he left us alone. Then the fires started.... Every day, new fires were lit. It was easy to figure out who was doing it, even before the 1st failed attempt. My alliance fought fire with fire (Punny!) and hit Jerk hard, everyday and as much as possible. Jerk has not been heard of in awhile, but it got me thinking about what the proper way to use Taverns and Guardhouses was. So, I'm going to tell you what I've been doing and ask your advice.

During the fire attacks I built up 4 GH at each outpost and my main castle. At this time, I also built 3 Taverns to strike back at Jerk. Now that this guy isn't bothering us any more the only time I use Fire Attacks is to mark a target: Start a fire and keep checking to see when it is put out, the idea being to get an idea about when the player comes online. 1st Q: This a good idea?

2nd Q: how many Gaurds do I need? So far I've gotten lucky; Anyone I've used this idea on has backed down after our fight. You have to think that they guessed where the last 7 fire attacks came from after I attacked them. I figure there has to be a good max number of Guards you would need, given how there is a set number of Spys one can have (15, right?)

3rd Q: can I increase my Spy beyong 15 (3 taverns) or make my Spys better? (Ei with research)

3 taverns is a must if you want to ever successfully espionage a decent player, or even a fairly low level RBC. As for taverns, it depends on your strategy in the game.

If you are a defensive player, I suggest getting 5/6 guardhouses. If you are an offensive player, I suggest getting no guardhouses. If you are somewhere in the middle, 3 might be a good idea.
