Topic: [77398] attacking barbarian fortress

[-77398] Ebag Xor [None] :: Sept. 22, 2012, 3:29 p.m.
I attacked a barbarian fortress and I sent the max number of soldiers. 72 at front 24 at each side. I mixed my heavy cross and 2hands (I don't have veteran). I lost.
I used tools to negate the wall advantages. What did I do wrong? Why couldn't I send more soldiers? I had plenty of soldiers, but I sent the max+tools thinking that would be enough. Can somebody clarify this for me?

The fortress seems to have most Norsemen with bow.

Use more melee attackers than ranged and use as many mantles as you can, as they reduce the damage caused by ranged soldiers.

send more than one wave. use 3 to 4 if possible

The best way to attack a barbarian fortress is sending 100% melee soldiers (Two Handed Swordsmen/Veteran Macemen)
using 10 ladders on the left side, 10 ladders in the middle with 10 rams, and sending more than one wave

thanks, I will use all melee next time. when you say use more than one wave, do you mean first attack with a very weak wave to take out the traps? or do you mean attack 2-3 times using full force? When you attack in waves, is it just like attacking multiple times as fast you can, or is there some special way to do it?

On your attack planning screen, in the corner where you see how long the troops take to get there, costs etc., you will see a box which should say 1 / [insert how many waves you have unlocked here]. That's your waves

Edit:
Unlock 2nd wave at level 13.
Unlock 3rd wave at level 26
Unlock forth wave at level 51

wow thanks! I feel dumb. Obviously never used that before. That only leaves one question, should the first wave be a weak one or a strong one?

Correct, apart from one thing. It doesn't always say "1/3" - level 51+ players have 4 waves and level 20-something and under only have 1 or 2 waves.

always send a strong force. you might want to consider using the tools xJadetsssx mentioned for first wave.
for second wave, you might want to use tools for left flank but save your tools for 3 wave onwards.

OR

you can send a sacrifice for first wave to take out the tools. and send your main army from second wave onwards

@bobfighter: I know, but what I said was based on his level :P I knew he wasn't level 51+ because he hasn't got veterans yet, and I knew he was above level 26 as he had heavy crossbowmen :D

Nope. You get the research tower at level 39, but it takes a while to unlock the one that lets you unlock even the first veteran. It took me several levels to get veterans, and once I reached 39, I stopped even trying to level up.

But confirmation would have been good even if he/she had stated his/her level.

@Bobfighter: edited my post ;) there was a bit more of a reason for being under level 51, but I couldn't put it into words ;)

LOL, yes I am under 51. And thanks for all the info. I should use the anti-wall tools for each wave, unless it is just a sacrifice wave. And I should send at least 2 strong waves at the left, did I get that about right?

After the first non-sacrifice wave, there's no need to send tools because you will have already won that flank and tools can't be used in the keep.

Attack the left and middle and in the second and later waves, it really doesn't matter whether you put the troops in the left or the middle - as long as you avoid the right.

Barbarian Fortresses sometimes have more tools, so a martyr wave don't always remove them, so you need more than 1 martyr wave to take them down.

What I do is, sending a strong first wave, and a lot of soldiers in other waves so they fight the right flank in the keep with more power. ^...^ with 100% melee soldiers I usually get a result like this

Jadet, do you lose any soldiers in that keep? Is there a certain number after which you don't lose anything in the keep?

A breakdown might be useful, at least for me. I know about the 100% melee, but the tools. You mentioned 10 scaling ladder on left and middle and 10 battering ram on the middle, I think. Is this what you used to get that result?

Yes, I use 10 ladders In the left flank, and in the middle, 10 rams and 10 ladders.
I lose between 5 - 7 soldiers in the keep.

384 is the maximum amount of soldiers you can send in the left and in the middle, so I think you'll always lose something in the keep, unless you use more powerful soldiers I guess, like the Kingsguard soldiers or the Travelling Knights

Or the fire renegades.

Thanks for the info. I'll be using it soon. :)

Also, there are players who need to have a balanced army because they need to attack other players and villages, so they don't keep 100% melee to fight the barbarian fortresses only, well there are other strategy I use, but this works better if the Barbarian Fortress don't have tools in the middle.

Is sending in the middle 4 Ladders OR 4 rams and 16 wooden mantlets, and sending more ranged than melee soldiers in the middle

I use the same settings but the best result i had is 50 loses.

Maybe because i don't have yet veterans and i send about 250-280 attackers :).
