yes u can use it in defence or attack but they r terrible in both u want good soldiers ge 2 handed swordsmen,halberdiers,longbowmen and heavy crossbowmen

Yeah, instead of being a good attacker/bad defender or vice versa, it's mediocre at both. I never bothered with them except to finish the recruitment quests, weren't worth it to me.
