I know how to send troops to Everwinter but can I get them to return and if so how?

Yes you can.

Go to the kingdom map and then hit the kingdom you want to move them to, then the send troops button. It will then show a pull down menu which you can choose which kingdom to send from, just hit Everwinter GlaCier.
