If I send 50 Spearmen to help defend my buddy, does there food still come from me?

Yes to you .. or too supporter .. becuase they are your troops and the player you are sending them can not controll them .. so you lost food and he get protected LOL !

that is right, but helping your alliance is better than saving food and not having as strong protection for awhile
