Paying will give you a massive advantage. That's why people do it. But unless you buy at least a million rubies (I'm not exaggerating), you don't have enough to spend on speeding up buildings.
But back to the original point, this happens in every game of this type. You're clearly impatient and inexperienced with this sort of thing, so I recommend, quite honestly, that you quit the game. 5 hours is nothing. Research at a higher level takes at least a day, but up to a week and there's 95 researches to do (including each level as a seperate one).
The game mechanics, if you're interested, are perfectly reasonable. At level 3 woodcutter, for instance, you're paying 218 resources and waiting 66 minutes for an extra 5 base production. Factor in PO and possible overseers or alchemist potions, and we should be able to safely say that you'll get an extra 8 wood from the upgrade at low levels. 218 cost divided by 8 more wood per hour = 27 and a quarter hours, plus an extra 1 hour 6 minutes for the time it takes to upgrade. That means that the woodcutter will pay for itself in roughly 28 hours 21 minutes, just over a day, depending on how you value wood to stone at that level.

This isn't intended to be one of those games where you sit down for 2-3 hours straight to play. It's designed to be one of those that you log in to for about 10-15 minutes at a time, multiple times throughout the day. If that's not your cup of tea, there are plenty of other MMO games out there.

Or play along with another game at the same time. Or read a book. Or watch the telly. Or listen to some music. Or go on the forums and chat. But you're right. This isn't a normal Miniclip play-for-half-an-hour-and-then-get-bored game, or a video-game-where-you're-constantly-killing-stuff game.
This is a game where you've got to be active. But not all at once. That's why we've got the daily login bonus. That's why the long tax collections exist. It's the reason why attacks take so long. Because of this, buildings take a while to build.
