is there a limit as to the number of castles a player can have in this game?

Yes, the maximum is 4 main castles (1 in each kingdom) and 3 outposts (7 in total).
Also the Resouce Village limit is 75 (30 in burning sand and fire peaks, and 15 in the everwinter glacier.)
