Does the watchtower work kind of like the yellow attack bugle that appears at the upper left when an attack is underway? Does a watchtower alert all the outposts if the main castle is being attacked? Or what about if an outpost is under attack--will the watchtower in the main castle send out an alert if one its outposts is attacked? And how much heads-up time does a watchtower alert give you to prepare for an attack?
I'm wondering whether I should ruby up for one.
Thanks

The watch tower adds more warning time when you are getting attacked, and only works in the castle where you put it, and it extend the field of vision so you can see the attacks giving you are warning earlier, if you are getting attacked in a outposts / castles where you don't have a watchtower you will still get the usual warning, a watchtower gives 50% or 100% more field of vision, and depends of the army size and speed of the enemy army use you will get less or more time (and also the distance the he is from you).
If you get 30 minutes of warning when a Robber Baron is attacking you, with a level 1 watchtower you will get 45 minutes, and more accurate report of the incoming army.
And that work with any other army..

Some people reported they see attacks coming sooner when that attack passes by an alliance member's castle. Any truth to that? Can alliance member's castles/op in the attack path help you see that army?

Not true, but it seems that if you have outposts surrounding you then they provide warnings even if you are getting attacked at your main castle.

Don't agree with you, I got once a 2 hours warning, and when I recieved the warning the attack was close to an alliance member.

No it has been tested. Me and a friend did it. It went right over him he was in my alliance and nothing happened. But it could of come right to your outposts.

Sounds like a discrepancy in tests. Maybe we need more testing. Maybe the alliance member must have a watchtower for it to give you advance alert.

I got a hour and a half warning from an attack that was passing by the watch tower on it's way to my outpost. It has also seen a couple of attacks on alliance members where the attack moved past me.

Jedet's put it in the most "real" terms...
I'm not going to provide the maths but warnings are best worked out by the following these general rules;
1) The further away the attack, the faster troops are able to cover ground. It works on a logmarithic type scale.
2) Horses speed them up moreso
3) A watchtower will only increase warning of the OP or main you put it in. Team mates', or other OPs', watchtowers won't do anything to help you.
I can have 2 armies attacking me with very different parameters... Below is a rough example to explain these differences. If you disagree with my theory, its your loss. Believe what you want but sometimes the simple answer is better than algebraic math
1) An army appears: Warning of 55 minutes.
They have been launched from 100miles away.
When the warning appears, the army is 70miles from me.
2) Another Army appears; Warning of 20 minutes.
They have been launched from 450 miles away.
When the warning appears, the army is 40miles.
Throwing in a curveball; On each occasion I have an ally 30 miles away who can send support to me in 30 minutes... an apple for whoever knows what happens next
