how do you upgrand the your wall and gate i am getting confused

upgrade the wall by going into construction mode (as if you're going to construct a building) and click on one of the arrows pointing away from your castle walls. The brown arrows are expansions you can buy with resources, the red arrows you can buy with gems. You can upgrade your gate at level 11 by clicking on the gate on your castle wall and clicking upgrade.
