No, it's not a must. Some alliances prefer ruby buyers but most are quite lenient.

I am also wondering about joining, or maybe starting, an alliance. As I scan the world map, there is a lot of territory out there and it would seem others in an alliance should be relatively close to you. I would say it would at least be strongly desired, but is it necessary?
Then; if I wanted to start an alliance, say with Lolly8, how do I find where she is relative to my location? I started scanning the map but didn't go far because I didn't have bread crumbs to drop to find my way back.

As you are both on different servers, this would not be possible.
If you were both on the same server, all you need to do is go to the world map, then type in "Lolly" in the search bar and it will take you straight to the main castle and you will also be able to see the distance between the two of you.
