is it normal to be approached by another alliance to join their's?

Yes. Quite normal. Before my old alliance went inactive (or while it was doing so), I was franticly inviting people in, evnetually handing leadership over to a person with an odd knack for doing that. When I dropped out (another alliance had expressed an intreast in me, and it would certainly benifit me), I recived about 14 requests in the 24 hours it took to join that other alliance.

i'm new, how can you tell one alliance is better than another?

Read the discriptions and member count. Though it depends on the person, I personally prefer a medium size active alliance with maybe 1-2 subs and a head, but not one in the big familys. (espaicly not since the US1 server war between said familys broke out). If you can't decide, archive all the requests, pick one at random, and go. If it does not work, drop out and go to another request.
