I am very new, just started yesterday, and still trying to figure out the essentials. Before I can attack someone I have to hire a spy and I can't figure out how to do that. Please help.

Hiring a spy is very simple.
Just build a tavern.
And spying someone before attacking isn't compulsory, you know.

Spying may not be compulsory, but many times it is a needed.Sending blind attacks can work too, but they have their own risks.Get three taverns for spies and you can send sabotage, plague, as well as spies.upgrade to get 15 spies, as castles have guardhouses to stop such activities when you send spies, and you may need many for 100% spying.The other castle lords will spy on you for sure otherwise.

You seem to have to be of a certain level before you can build a tavern. That limits the attacks you can make safely until you obtain the right level.
