dont make to much farmhouses they wont be much use since the workload thing has came in it is best to just keep on leveling up to upgrade them though i think you shouyld lose some soldiers in battle because when thier is no food left they will die

kinda the same situation.. but does the population effect your food? I heard it doesn't and only the troops do, but I'm always in the red and cant seem to get out..

the population increases the food consumption.

No, only the soldiers affect the food consumption, the citizens which give tax do not.

Adding dwellings decreases your Public Order which lowers the amount of food produced by farm houses.
To get out of the "red" on your food production, you have to upgrade the level of your farmhouses until you are producing enough food to feed all of your troops OR reduce the number of troops you have to meet your current food production. Other things that will increase your food production are decorations (increases your Public Order), upgrading your Flour Mill and building/upgrading the Bakery.
