I recently got attacked by 400 THS. The player told me that his alliance had told him to attack me and that they had sent him troops to use in the attack. Is this possible and how. I can't use support troops to attack?

It isn't possible. The only thing that may have happened is that they sent him support troops so that he could focus on attacking without making any defense troops. You cannot 'borrow' troops from allies in the way you mentioned or was mentioned to you.

The short short answer is he lied or mislead you or misunderstood it. He made or 'aquired' all 400 of those THS legitimately.

Yeah - I think some players do not realise that even though the support troops are on their walls and in their keep. They are not actually theirs ( effecting food consumption )

Easy mistake to make though.

Yes, he probably meant that his alliance sent him support, so he could focus on attack troops. Give me his cords and I will hit him. He only sent 400 2x Swordsmen? Where's the range?
