I've personally learned better than to use the autofill button when designing attacks for anything, but I thought for the benefir of those who haven't had the experience with it I'd pass on the advice. First, when there's space for ten ladders or five breaching towers, and either will do the job against a 100% wall, it will of course burn your ruby tools in preference to your resource tools. Knew that, could deal with that if that were all. However, autofill also apparently knows less about the most basic GGE tactics than I did three days after playing the game. I just tested it in setting up an attack against the robber baron king to see if it was still as stupid as ever...yup. King had a left flank with nothing but missile defenders. My commander had an excellent melee soldier boost, less of a ranged boost...I picked him specifically when I saw that flank. Tested autofill. Guess what it filled that flank with EXCLUSIVELY when I had plenty of powerful attack soldiers available, both ruby and coin, of both melee and missile specializations ? Yup...filled it up with nothing but MISSILE attackers (note to those who haven't run into this distinction yet...all units in the game, attack and defense, are categorized as either missile or melee. Missile attackers kick tail against melee defenders but are slaughtered by missile defenders; and the same is true with melee attackers...great against missile defenders, stink against melee defenders. A trained CHIMPANZEE would know better than to put nothing but missile attackers against a flank that has nothing but missile DEFENDERS...they'd throw all the MELEE attackers they could muster against that flank and expect an easy win on that flank. The AI in GGE's autofill function apparently understands less about their own game's combat system than a trained chimpanzee does. If you ARE a trained chimpanzee, I mean no insult or defamation by this comparison, so please don't file a lawsuit against me for language discriminatory to simians

Autofill only use the ruby tools it is a waste.....I personally use autofill then remove the tools and units which I don't need then sort them out

autofill is a set of parameters, it does not know what you want
yes, GGE was a butt-head and did things certain ways, like taking ruby tools away first, or putting range against range so it costs you your mantlets, but the game can NOT be programmed to know what you want.
you said you had range (missile) and melee both. the game does not know which you want to use. just because you had a melee commander does not mean you want to use melee troops, its possible its the best commander you had for the job, even without a good range bonus. was it the best commander? no, but the game does not know that
it also does not know what you want for your tools. not only does it take ruby tools first, but what if you want to send melee troops? then you dont need to send mantlets, but the game says that sending mantlets makes the range defenders weaker, so sending any troop at range defense is good, since the mantlets take away their power. the game does not know you want to save tools and just send melee troops, it just weakens the defense as much as possible in every way possible
autofill is great for teaching you the basics, but thats all it does. its never meant to be used by experienced players who know exactly how to to attack. just weakening every bonus as much as possible is not the best thing to do. the game however, sees defense power, and sees a way to weaken that.
if you had 10 range defense with a 150% bonus, and a 100% wall bonus, the game will send iron mantlets to cancel out the range bonus.... but also send wall tools to take away the wall bonus. if the range power goes to 0, you dont need to send wall tools, because 0% with any bonus is still just 0% power, but the game does not take that into account
attacking and defending are ALWAYS specialized events, there is no 1 set thing that works in every scenario. taking that into account, autofill tries to use the same scenario every time, making it a bad way to attack.
autofill is great for teaching basics, but its not psychic, it was not made because it knows exactly what you want. just deal with that fact and keep doing the same thing you have always done

I see your point, kind of, but I'm not sure it teaches the basics all that well if it teaches you to use ranged against ranged, which is almost never a good idea.

if you have reduced the ranged power, you still ranged in case they change it to melee...
and the game doesn't know which one is NPC and which one is RPC.

Move all ruby tools to a castle you dont use for attacking....
Then it works according to plan... well almost :P

well, if the rober baron king has even 1 melee defender on that flank, once the defenders range stat it reduced to 0% it will be less losses becuase all thats left to kill is the melee defenders since range defenders are useless at 0% power and if you had any mantlets, im sure the game AI used them becuase it eats up ruby tools, so i get its train of thought
Thats how i attack NPCs, i make their range troops useless and i rush in my crossbow kingguard (more range on the flank/front i reduced to 0% usually means less melee = less losses with range attackers)
