How do you use gems  efficiently

the bakery. the bakery minuses a percentage of troops food consumption and helps a lot at high levels when your holding 1000's of horrors and other high consuming troops.

Gems can be used for different things

The best ones or most common are CY strength for your casta / commander. 

You can also have flank gems for comms and wall gems for castas.  Everyone sets their own stuff up differently.
