when do the defender spot your incoming attack ?

It depends on the following things (this may not be a complete list):
-Late Detection on your Commander
-Early Detection on their Castellan
-Watchtower level in defender's castle
-Size of attacking army
-Distance the attack has travelled
-Research boosting early/late detection
-Type of attacking troop

The strength of the attack (ie raw attack power) has no bearing on detection if that is your question.

What Ang most likely means by this is the speed of the troops being used. I'm not 100% sure through.
