Topic: [333530] Avoiding GGE built-in pitfalls for new players

Hello new player! And welcome!

You're probably used to games that provide a moderately useful introduction to the game mechanics via some sort of storyline, but this game is very different. The storyline actively misleads you into building a mediocre castle, one that is very easy to attack and loot by other players. I'm writing this to help you avoid following GGE's path of becoming a farm for stronger players.

First, you've started your castle and it's telling you how to build stuff. Great! Except that 1 of the buildings is entirely worthless and another is nearly worthless unless it's rubied up (and even then, it's wildly outdated). The entirely worthless building is the "defensive workshop." You only use this building once and that's to satisfy a storyline plot, to make a single defensive tool. After that you'll get enough cheap tools via your missions tent and will have to use ruby tools on real players or lose. The cheap tools are useless against all but the worst attacks from players, so no one ever uses the defense workshop. Yet because it's in the storyline, every new player builds them in all their castles and OPs. It's ok to build in your castles, including the outers, for the storyline XP, but then delete the worthless things once you've maxed them.

The stronghold is the second meaningless building - if you don't pay rubies to upgrade it to level 5. At level 2, you can safely house 50 soldiers during an attack on you, which is essentially meaningless. At level 5, you can safely house 500 - in today's game, this number is simply not high enough, unless you are housing wolves or assassins, but that's another story.

So when I'm looking for targets and I find one who has a defense workshop and a stronghold, I know I've found someone who doesn't know how to play the game well. An easy target for me.

Second, once you get through the beginning storyline, you'll quickly realize that there are 3 resources you require: food, stone and wood. You'll probably think all three are equally important - almost every new player does - and try to build an equal amount of each. Most players will capture 1 stone, 1 wood and 1 food OP having been mislead into believing that's a good strategy.

Well, it's not. Food is the *only* important resource. With food, you can have more troops. More troops =  more looting. You'll get more wood and stone if you build high food production as you can then have large armies that go around looting both events and players, especially the players who don't focus on food. Because those players won't have enough troops to defend your attacks.

So there are 2 types of players in this game: looters and farmers. The farmers have been mislead by the official storyline of this game, they've built useless buildings instead of decorations and they're concentrating on producing stone and wood in addition to food. Looters, by contrast, only produce food, making us predators on the farmers.

Which do you want to be?

That's an interesting last paragraph considering how many people complain about being "farmed"... :P

After GGE changes how looting and resource production works, those complaints are going to be unending as they become hit more and more. But, tough, we predators will still prioritize food and simply take their non-food.

:)

'Thank you sir - me too! I've had to abandon 5 OPs now. It's nuts. This game teaches players to be prey and then the developers wonder why so few people continue.

Can't we list hideouts as a building that's useless. It just takes up space that could be used for decos yes?

Those are legitimately useful for people not in the top 30 alliances. Well, at least until the gem update screws over fire casting.

Hospital is also useless building. DON'T build it! You cannot get rid of it ever. Every other useless building, you can demolish it later, but this cannot.

I would demolish at once my 10lvl hospital if it be possible. I don't know how many rubies it cost, but sure it was expensive, still demolish. I never use it. 600 in it all the time, only ruby troops almost always. Never going to heal them.

The hospital also auto-heals your troops when you get attacked; it immediately returns some of them to being active. A level 10 one saves 25% of your troops that otherwise would have died. So it has some use.

^Also there is that new healing troops achievement as well to think about........

From reading this, it seems like your hospital is always full of ruby troops.
If you hover over the troop in the hospital menu, a garbage can symbol should appear in the top left corner. Click that to discharge the ruby troops from your hospital. That way, you can make room to heal the coin troops.
