It's a combination of
Food symbol on your coat of arms
Food Overseer
Beri food bonus
Hunting Lodge
VIP food bonus
Subscription #1 gives food bonus
Research - plow and three field crop rotation
Relic greenhouses and conservatories
A good number of highly upgraded granaries
Base and standard construction items in the right places
Relic (preferably premium from Horizon winnings) construction items
Decorations - bought, won, fusion-forged etc (you can now get great ones with aqua in Luna shop in storm)
Relic hero with food production as a bonus. For mains (green, ice, sand, fire) there is a very nice gold star one in the blacksmith with 1200 extra food production. Not cheap but worth investing in as the other defence attributes are good too BUT only for mains, not ops
There's no quick way to do it, and no perfect number of granaries to have - I have more than most people's castles I look into, but I also have higher food production. However, I employ all of the above, and I cannot deny a reasonable input of rubies over time.
First things first - employ all of the above that you can without ruby spend or by a bit of regular effort (dragons, fortresses, beri, maxed tower hits etc for some rubies to invest), beri food bonus, hunting lodge, coat of arms. Make sure your flour mill as upgraded as soon as you are able to do each level. Go into planning mode and make sure you have every available square filled with decos if not in use by other necessary buildings.
Fusion forge is vital if you aren't buying high PO decos - get that upgraded or fuse something daily.
Food overseer is often on offer and if you buy several weeks you get a discount, then buy him regularly to keep the discount.
VIP can now be bought in the blacksmith tent.
Relic greenhouses and conservatories need regular forays into storm and outer realms, although nowadays you need tokens for barracks, apiaries, etc, so build your relic GH and Cons to level 16 (because after level 10 they increase food storage capacity and at level 16 they have a PO value so somewhat make up for the loss of PO by removing a deco to make space
Make the +200 food regular food production items in construction yard for your lowest producing granaries and win, or buy the base level ones for the highest producing, with the best being used on your relic food buildings
Horizon is an absolute must do as you win the materials for relic food production items and can very quickly add 11,000 extra food per castle (and more in time).
Of course the need for mead is going to change all of that, but then you need the food production first in order to sacrifice it for mead production.

my ops have production of 124k, 125k and 126 k ( and yes before anyone says i have high level ruby bought decos) however was advised by a reliable source that before introduction of mead many of the top players on the DE server had productions in excess of 140k .
ps production of 126k allows for just under 70k troops without being in the red

the main thing to worry about when getting high food production is your castle's is getting your PO (public order) as high as possible... do this by adding decorations and lowering your total population by destroying any dwellings...(common to load one of your outposts with nothing but dwellings and zero dwellings in all other castles as to still collect taxes)

What are the advantages of building up one's Relicus? Mine is at Level 7 and seems to do what I need for upgrading. Maybe there are structures I cannot add yet at my level? Thanks! WB

I know one guy who has more than 300,000 troops in his outpost...
But for the most part, many level 950s have 600,000+ troops in their MAIN!!
