Noob: I'm level 11. I only have mace and crossbow, no higher level units. I just sent my surrounding RBCs from level 7 to level 8, and now suddenly each time I attack I risk losing significant numbers of soldiers. There was no risk of this at lower levels, and doing spying does not help because I don't understand how to interpret the results. I have extensively browsed the forums but I have not found any user guide, in fact it has been suggested that there is not one. Is that true?
If there is no user guide, which of these suggestions have merit for saving me some troops?
-send a first wave of just 1 soldier
-attack just one flank (presumably the weakest in the spy report)
-send along ladders (I don't have enough wood to make many-gold is no prob:p)
-try to match attackers v defenders (I don't understand this very well-the many suggestions all seem to involve high level units)

1) the first wave thing, that is to get rid of tools to save on ladders/rams
2) you should always attack at least two flanks, and all three if the keep is filled
3) ladders are good, but in no way necessary
4) for matching troops, crossbows (on offense) are good at beating spear men and crossbows (on defense), mace men (on offense) are good at beating bowmen and mace men (on defense) hope this helps

HIgher your Attack Power lower your casualties, so sending that could probably make you win
( if they don't have tools), but always send more just to be sure o_O and to get more loot

Or could send all mace since defense strength of crossbows vs "melee" attackers is only 20. I found it helpful to write down attack strengths and defense strengths for the different types of troops (click on the "i"). Also wrote down spy reports and corrected them after attacks so I didn't always have to keep sending spies on robber barons. On the ones where the flank defenses switch melee vs ranged, I do anyway. doesn't matter much until L 8.3, or 1 away from L 9.
And bowmen are good at taking out crossbows too.

although maces can beat crossbows on defense, crossbows are even better (defense against ranged=6)
