Does anyone have any ideas on the most efficient ways of getting rubies without paying money?

Level up RBCs (Robber Baron Castles) and keep attacking them.
Barbarian towers, cultist towers, fortresses all give rubies as well.

It's my observation that the things that REALLY speed up your progress cost huge rubies. But even if you don't spend them, you'll get to where you are going eventually with XP quests and the like.
The things that don't matter as much don't cost a lot of rubies, but if you're not careful, they can drain you quick.
If you are patient, you do not need to worry about rubies. I gave up on seeking rubies. Now I have 730. It just builds if you leave it alone. (Kind of like an investment portfolio. That's how I view my rubies.)

if you save up enough and spend them during a 50% off everything spent in rubies thing you can buy a great many things such as a bakery

by logging in every day for a week, you earn 70 rubies. Then there are the other ways ( which were mentioned). If you save your rubies and then spend them on something concrete ( bakery, stables, etc), then you will do better at this game. Spending them on things like speeding up building, events, etc, will make your ruby stock drop quickly without much reward back.

I attack at least one RBC every day usually more like 3 or 4. that gets me 15 rubies whenever I get them because my levels are high so if you keep attacking them you will start earning lots of rubies. Also log in every day and complete the treasure maps. on the last highwayman of the second treasure map you get around 50 rubies. also do the nonXP quests. Barbarian fortresses give out 50 rubies when you beat them and the fortresses in burning sands and fire peaks give 250?

Burning sands has been increased to 280 (from 250). Fire peaks has been increased to 370 (from 300).

log in every day. on the 4th and 7th day you recievce rubies. also, level youself up, and increase your title with glory. certain titles give you lots of rubies.

You can get rubies by finishing acheivments and getting some titles
