Advice for new players.

After playing for a while, I thought I can share what I learned so far:

Building according to the quest line is not ideal. For new castles it is much quicker to start with building 5 of each kind, 5 food, 5 wood cutters, 5 dwellings, 5 stone. Also, build a lot of decorative items. They will speed up your production by a lot, and you can ‘store’ them away when you need the space for other buildings. In the beginning the building time will be much shorter, but by the time you reach level 10, building these things will take quite long. So give yourself a head start and build them rather sooner than later.

Outposts:
At the end of the game you want three outposts: two with 8 food + 2 woods and one with 8 food + 2 stone. But before you get there you will need a lot of resources for building and research and opening the new worlds, and these main food ones won’t give you that. What is very important is to keep your main castle and your outposts close together. This will save you time and coins for transports, and make it easier to move soldiers between them. So start with outposts close to you, and the main resource should be wood or stone, but even 6+2 is fine.

If you want a shortcut, a quick way for leveling up will be to capture an outpost that is connected to ruins of a player that left the game. This can save you weeks of building.

Tools:
When you are a lower level, you may underestimate the power of tools. You will need them, and you will need lots, you can never have enough. If you have some wood and stone, make sure that always when you play you make tools. At least scaling ladders or battering rams, at the end-game, one attack can need like 168 ladders. So stock them up, make hundreds, as often and many as you can make. You will also need defensive tools. Make about a hundred of ‘throwing stones’, ‘flaming arrows’, ‘moat spikes’ and ‘gate mats’, but this is less important than the ladders and rams.

Coins:
When you get to the glacier, the quickest way to make coins won’t be with taxes anymore, but rather by attacking robber barons in the ‘the glacier’ and later in the ‘burning sands’.

But in the beginning taxes can be very easy to get some coins. Take an outpost with materials that you need less, and build tons of level 1, 2 or 3 dwellings, for very little wood and stone, it will boost your tax collection enormously. Important, even though if you collect your taxes late, the collection will always be more than it cost you, so there is never a reason not to collect taxes, even if you are going to be away for a week.

I wish when I was a low level that I had captured an outpost from someone that had gone into ruins.

Tyler, did you attack some robber barons? That should give you the xp to level up.

Good thread
I attacked an inactive level 60 for his outpost, so it doesn't have to be in ruins necassarily.
Just check if the player is active or not.
This opened up buildings at levels I was weeks away from attaining.

goodenoff, they speak of Everwinter glacier. you can only get there after level 25. i myself wish there was a thread like this when i had to capture my first outposts. there are lots of advice threads but none gave this advice. especially about the resource buildings. you really should build more than three from the start, as later on in the objectives, they tell you to upgrade 5 instead of 3.

How can you check to see if players are active? It's fairly obvious when someone is inactive but I don't like attacking my neighbors without evidence that they are, in fact, inactive. I know, I need to get over "playing nice."

thanks,
