Okay, I have been reading a bit about how to attack but am totally confused. I want to capture an outpost and the one I just lost to had 77 farmers (5 on the left flank, 9 frontal and 63 in the courtyard), 5 military units, a mystery unit on the right flank, 0 defense tools and 0 city guards. It has an open gate and a green flag.
What kind of soldiers and # do I need at each area and what tools. I am level 14.
And if you are part of an alliance - what do they do? And what about sword brothers - what do they do to help you?
Can someone help me?

I would recommend using at least 40 attack units (maceman, crossbowman, etc). The more the better. Siege tools are your friends so use those too. Farmers aren't very good defenders and are very easy to take down.

An alliance is a group of players that come together and agree to help one another. Starting an alliance requires resources, coins and rubies. You can go to war against other alliances, form non agression agreements, NAA's for short, meaning you both agree to not attack each other. A pact is an agreement of support and both parties agree to not attack each other.

Sword brothers allow you to use more spies and more commanders. The more spies you have the less chance of getting caught. Also the more comanders you have the more attacks you can send out. So start finding some sword brothers. You can have 18 sword brothers max.

Another question- I only have 18 attack soldiers (macemen, crossbowman) because I keep losing them in battles and my gold is low right now (waiting for taxes). What about my other solders (defense units) - are they good in battles or more for defending my castle.
Also what kinds of tools are good when I attack?

You can use them if you wish, but it will be a waste as defenders are good for nothing when it comes to attack. Also if you want to avoid getting hit often then join an alliance if you haven't done so already. It would be best to join an alliance that can support you.
