how does one get out of an alliance?

Go to the alliance tabs, enter the management tab and you can see a broken icon of two hands under the description, click on that and confirm, and you'll leave the alliance.

That's how you leave an alliance, but untangling yourself from the situation may not be as simple as that. The alliance could get ticked off at you for leaving and start ganging up on you. I would recommend trying to be as diplomatic with leaving as possible and finding a new alliance in a hurry.
