send about 30 troops to small villages then you can get max per attack

yeah farm small villages and then when you get 100, try medium villages. I plundered 7752 wood and 8639 stone in an hour.

Okay, maybe this has an obvious answer, but I'm missing it: What is the point of the tents? I mean, I have over the number of soldiers that my tents will "support" but . . . nothing is happening. My soldiers aren't deserting. My food supply isn't being negatively affected. So what is the point? Can I just not send extra soldiers from my castle over or something?

Yes, that is correct. You cannot send over anymore troops until you have less than the capacity.

My tips are:
If you want to win it, it's a good idea to speed down the work on the main castles
Manlets are the perfect tool for towers with only ranged soldiers! Use them!
Attack small villages every time you have the ability to do it! If you need lots of resources, you may attack middlesized villages, but you will surely get some losses in soldiers; use recruitable troops for them!
Don't build too many tents if you can't feed them all.
Build drill grounds! You will punish yourself in the end if you built too many pennants.
And the most important: Take your time; don't rush to defeat a castle. Be sure to have the greatest chance to win (high morale, great soldiers, efficient tools)
