[-88050] Garrex [None] :: April 4, 2013, 10:28 a.m.
It's been a long time since I haven't had a successful defense of my castle but reading some of the tips and tricks in here has me going backwards a bit. I strayed from my norm and adjusted the melee to ranged defender ratio on my walls against an incoming attack of about 700 attackers and it ended up being my most costly defense. Of the 1700+ stationed at my castle (a good bit of which were reinforcements from alliance members), this was the first time that I didn't fully hold one single part of the wall and my total losses were a little over 900. 8|

Not good at all.

I'm confident that I would've lost a lot less had I not messed with anything but wanted to come in here to get some feedback and advice on what I can do differently/better for the next time.

Well Garrex, adjusting the ratio of melee/ranged can be a disaster, do you have some report screenshots, we could be able to tell you more about what happened in specific. Having good equipment can also make a very large difference, but with some screenshots or information I will be glad to give you more useful information than making assumptions :").

Obviously losing all the 3 sides of the walls is not a good start if you want to decrease losses.

Hey Jade. Good to see you in my thread. I'll put together some screen shots now - was thinking about that as soon as I posted this. Do you want screen shots of what happened at each of the walls too or just a copy of the detailed report?

More info I have, more details I can give :") Feel free to upload what you can and think is important.

You got it. Bear with me for a little bit while I put it all together. I held but I can't believe what a disaster that was.

If you your defences set up. 0-50-50. You would have a better in in not losing all walls because there is more troops on that side of the wall. If you defeat one side of the wall there will be no attack bonuses and there for less losses. The commanders will also make a big difference in battle. What was your commnader vs your enemies commader?

[1527603] Garrex [None] :: April 4, 2013, 12:21 p.m.
Equipment (my castellan sucks):

+32% ranged soldier's combat strength
+7% early attack warning
+28% moat protection
+22% gate protection
-4% damage caused by fires
+6% conquer travel speed (useless in defense)
+5% glory
(I have no equipment for a melee soldier bonuses - no joke. Bad luck)

Attacking commander:

+15% longer to detect army
+5% building damage
+14% glory points
-49% enemy wall protection
+41% melee soldier strength
+33% ranged soldier strength
+8% honor

[1527645] hello4912 [None] :: April 4, 2013, 1:21 p.m.
that would have made a difference in the battle. If your enemy attacks with 100 veteran mace men and has a 33% bonus you are basically fighting 133 veteran macemen. His - wall proctection and ranged and melee attack bonus were better than yours so it would mean higher losses for you. Try upgrade your equipment in the techinus, buy equipment in the kingdoms or attack robber barons. Hope this helps. :)

It does, thanks. :thumbup:

There's not a whole lot I can do about my Castellan's equipment though. I keep getting hosed out of scoring any with a melee bonus. Is there some way to "guarantee" that your smithy upgrade produces a certain type of effect or equipment?

Also: based on those reports and everything else I included, what other recommendations do you have for next time?

[1527740] hello4912 [None] :: April 4, 2013, 3:33 p.m.
there is no way to guarantee what equipment you get unfortantly.

sorry that is all the tips I have. Its works for me pretty well i haven't lost an attack in about 3 months now with this method of defence.

[1527756] Ante55 [None] :: April 4, 2013, 3:59 p.m.
you shouldn't have the 25-50-25 setup, it's horrible

You should only defend 2 sections unless you are sure you would win on all 3 sections

In this situation I would split it 50-0-50 to get 100 on the flanks

However, he had far more superior troops then you so maybe a 0-0-100 would be better to make sure he didn't get the attack bonus

[1527782] xJadetsssx [None] :: April 4, 2013, 4:37 p.m.
As stated Above, the default 25%-50%-25% strategy is a mess, and even if you are a ruby player usually it will make you lose, a 50-0-50 or a 100-0-0 would have been better, or even 0-100-0 and well equipment kind of make a difference too.
However you had soldiers and good tools, so it's more about using a better formation and better equipment actually.

A 0-100-0 was be the best formation for you in that battle. But we also can't deny you were fighting with weaker soldiers, so the losses will be a little high.

[1528130] Garrex [None] :: April 4, 2013, 10:27 p.m.
Thanks for all the great feedback. This gives me some ideas to kick around and some new strategies to implement. I'd heard mixed reviews of the 0-100-0 formation as well as any other where only one part of the wall was guarded and had a bad experience with it once about 10 levels ago so it wasn't something that I'd even considered in this one.

Do you think that changing the ratio of melee and ranged defenders also worked against me?

[1528135] xJadetsssx [None] :: April 4, 2013, 10:33 p.m.
Not really, the balance you made was good enough.

[1532710] HateBox [None] :: April 10, 2013, 6:16 a.m.
one other thing to think about. at the top of the scren where it has "overview", change it to see the wave breakdown. if the attacker sent three waves, and put most of his forces in the third wave... you'd have had no defensive tools used against his third wave on your flanks.
