Here's my tips
do espionage first
try to get at least 2 flanks (makes it way easier)
Target ranged with meele and meele with ranged
if the defense is attack troops use the ranged or meele attackers

What about using tools? What should I use and when? I don't really see a difference in using just a few tools at a time.

Hi, I'm new at this. I have the peace protection dove for 1 more day. My royal adviser tells me to attack before I am attacked as "others" are watching me. I can't seem to find any instructions anywhere that I really understand enough to implement. Do I know if a spy is about? What should I look for? I know nothing about attacking (or defending for that matter) and feel like I'm just waiting to be plucked! The whole process is very unsettling. Can someone please walk me through what to do, how to do it or what to expect? Do I have to be actually playing before an attack takes place? Many thanks in advance.

Hi Darlingest, I'm new too. But it looks like you attack players the same way you attack robber barons. Just go to the world screen, select your victim, and choose attack. Then the screen will come up asking what troops you want to send and how to position them (on which flanks). If you have done espionage ahead of time, it will show you the defenses for that flank at the top of the screen. Then click attack and your troops are off to do their thing - you'll get a message letting you know how they did.
For defense, you set up your defenses by selecting defense under the military tab (bottom right side of your city screen). You do not (apparently) need to be playing to be attacked, so be prepared. Do some espionage on your neighbors to see what they're packing (so you know how much defense you might need) and you probably want to get into an alliance that can help protect you from the stronger players.

If you attack before protection is over it will ask you do you want to loose your protection before you decide to attack. I f you attack you loose protection. If you don't feel you have enough troops or if you dont feel ready to attack I wouldn't but its only 1 day. Im a newbie too so take it for what its worth

i agree with the first post, espionage the best you can and what i do normally is attack just the flanks or just the gate and use lots and lots of equipment. i hope this helped

So if our opponent is using attacking soldiers as defenders (which is often the case) you are to still use attacking soldiers against them?
I thought it was like this - and correct me if I am wrong
Attacking melee defenders - use - Defending Ranged Soldiers
Attacking ranged defenders - use - Defending Melee Soldiers
Defending melee defenders - use - Attacking Ranged Soldiers
Defending ranged defenders - use - Attacking Melee Soldiers
Or something like that LOL

No. First, you've got a bit mixed up with the melee/ranged - what you've done is something I got wrong for a long time. The game specifically tells you to match melee with ranged during your first attack, but to realise how to defend, you need to take a step back.
Matching melee with ranged and vice versa in attacks gives you an advantage - in other words, the attacker gets an advantage for matching the opposite type together.
Therefore, if you're defending, matching melee with ranged would give the attacker a bonus, so you need to match melee with melee and ranged with ranged. So the defender gets an advantage for matching the same type together.
Now with the offensive/defensive. You should ALWAYS use attacking troops to attack, and defending troops to defend. With troops like the two-handed swordsmen, their offensive stats are far superior to their defensive stats. That's why you use them to attack. They are DESIGNED to attack, and in defense, they will get slaughtered. It doesn't matter about your opponents. The only reason you'll get defense soldiers in attack, or attackers in defense, are against a Robber Baron Castle designed to be fairly easy to defeat, or against a player who is offline or doesn't understand how to play the game.
So attackers in attack, defenders in defense, melee vs ranged when attacking and melee/melee or ranged/ranged in defense.
