These are just you're basic references for how the attacking and defending work.
-If you see something that doesn't seem correct or something that may be needed toadd please post here.

Attack:

~~~You~~~~~~Enemy~~~
Melee attack > Melee attack
Ranged attack > Ranged attack
Melee attack > Ranged defense
Ranged attack > Melee defense
Melee/Ranged attack > Swordsman and Armed citizens
Defense:
~~~You~~~~~~Enemy~~~
Melee defense > Melee defense
Ranged defense > Ranged defense
Melee defense > Ranged attack
Ranged defense > Melee Attack
Melee Defense > Swordsman

Flank Defense:

100% or all troops at any flank will give your defenders a boost of 30% at the keep
50/50 or 2 flanks defended will make neither you nor the enemy a boost at the keep 0%
3 Flanks with any % as long as 1 defender stands there will give the attackers a 30% boost

When killing swordsmen (similar stats to archers) and armed citizens, it does not make much of a difference whether you send melee attack or ranged. If the target has all swordsmen for his defense, then I would send a balanced mix of melee attackers and ranged attackers.

-Yes, when the enemy is attacking you with the swordsmen, they can only attack with melee power. Therefore, a melee defender such as spearman, halberdier, veteran spearman, or the sentinel of the kingsguard would be ideal for defending them.

I don't think this is correct.

If you defend only one flank with 100%, and win. There will be an even battle in the keep.
If you defend 50/50 or 2 flanks and hold them both, you the defender will receive a boost of 30% at the keep.
If you defend all 3 flanks and hold the battle is over, the attacker loses. If the attacker wins all 3 flanks then they will get a the 30% boost in the keep.

I don't know if you got the wording mixed up or whose perspective you were going by but it's confusing and does not sound accurate. The combat report always goes by the attacker's perspective.

I really don't understand what you are saying in the top part either. How is your melee attack > than their melee attack?

Depends a lot. For example, Macemen are bad against melee attack, but two handed sword and vet mace are bad against ranged. So this one depends. And if you count swordsman as attackers, it doesn't matter what you send. (though I have never used swordsman before other than for recruiting quests)

It's melee to range to win a battle!
