I have decided to come up with a list of tips and tricks for the forum!
The Search Function
Often people don't use the search function as they don't really know how. Basically you type in a word or more, and it searches all existing threads for those words. Can be useful for some things, for others, not so much. It can be useful for finding a players profile by typing in their name.
Search thread
Sometimes the search function throws up threads such as the 'Questions' thread, notorious for its long length. However, on a little bar near the top, there is actually a little button titled 'search thread' .
This acts in the same way as the search function, but just for that thread.
Rate thread
Next the search thread button it says 'rate thread' . This can be used to give a thread your rating out of 5. It is then shown next to the threads name. Of course, the score is averaged out if several people vote.
Online check
May seem a bit obvious, but can be missed. Next to players usernames on posts, is a very small circle. If it is green, they are online, if it is clear they are offline. Note it can be turned off so may not always be correct.
Settings
If you hit 'settings' above 'my profile' it gives you a list of subscribed threads with new posts. What this is, is a list of threads that you have posted on, that contain posts you haven't seen. I find this very useful.
Profiles
Upon viewing others profiles, you can see quite a lot of information. In the box below the 'find all posts' 'find all started threads' you can see what they are currently viewing, if they are offline when they were last online. Way down at the bottom, you can see their posts per day, giving you an insight as to how active they are.
Forum FAQ guide
There is actually a little guide to the forum FAQ's and bits about the forum here: http://en.board.goodgamestudios.com/empire/faq.php
Will add more soon.

Good points there. Maybe you could post some screenshots, it would be essential as visual aids always allow others to be more comprehensive.

Okay, but if it still doesn't work after a while I could post some screenshots.

What I thought, people come on and get shouted at for not using the search function and things. Now they know what they are.

Nice basic outline.. Just hope people actually take it into consideration and use the info provided. Rather than post a thread that has about 15 others threads regarding the same issue. Perhaps add something about not bumping old threads. That has been happening a lot as of late for some reason.

Bump, bump.
As added information a player with a "clear" online check, as you described, doesn't always mean a user is offline.
