how do you look up alliances on this game? Is there a particular place which you can search them?

Kahannam, in the lower left of your game screen, there is the little green-red-yellow icon for 'Rankings.' Click on it, and then again on its mirror-image, right above, and you'll come to a Rankings screen. You'll see your player and alliance name, in with others.

In the left side, you'll see a red-green 'Alliance Ranking' icon. Click on that, and then you'll see your alliance rank. There is a white box at the bottom that says, "Search by name/rank."

Near the bottom right of the screen, there is a green and red hand shaking hands. Click on that. Click found alliance, and it tells you how many you need.

Updated! Well, not the screenshots. It's still the same method, only difference is the buildings look different.
