Well, you do have the forum announcements threads which says when and on what day there is going to be a downtime.
Although i don't think a lot of people read it.

No warning anywhere of this one.  We here on the US server got another one today, about an hour ago as I write this, in addition to the announced one everybody got to kick off the KL.

One minute is not enough time, since most don't clock watch.  On planned shutdowns of any kind, they should do a 1hr notice, 20min, 5 min and the 1 min notice in game as standard practice.  Unplanned give us as much notice as possible, but always the 5 and 1 min warnings.  Would help generate goodwill, and GGE needs all the goodwill it can get from the players.

so people can set uo arracks to land during the downtime now that sounds like a brilliant idea

They don't give you enough time to hide your troops because if they do they're also giving other people enough time to launch at your troops.

While I agree more notification would be nice, I also realize that some players would take advantage to launch new attacks realizing the defenses would not be changed probably.  Therefore a maybe a compromise is needed.

I would suggest increasing the notification time slightly maybe to more than 5 minutes, while at same time preventing the launching of any new attacks starting immediately with the shutdown notification.

I realize this is not a perfect solution and I also have no knowledge of the programming that would be required currently.  Therefore I have no way to weigh the benefits versus detriments of doing this.  It is merely a suggestion as an alternative and definitely would not be high on my priority list of items needed to improve the game

Or they could just make it so that all attacks launched after the shutdown notification has been issued will bounce automatically upon impact, meaning that the attack will still land on the target but there will not be any battle.

I feel like preventing or blocking attacks completely will only create confusion and infuriate a lot of people.

All way's has been a bone of contention that one group has more knowledge of a shut down than others will gain an advantage  : whether allegations that mods who might not pass on all messages ( or who know exact times a server will go down or come up!) people who can read German, people who can read etc etc...

fairest way is to have a bit of randomness with the boards posting a general time and expectation of coming back...

yes, very frustrating when trying to get those last few hits under a deadline but actually its no more a detraction of from the strategy pretensions of the game than... well any random thing gge introduces in terms of bugs, failed update and untended consequences and the downtime at least gives a break from the constant meaningless pop-ups

And that then can cause starvation easily so also has a downside

Don't they freeze the food consumption during the time they are performing the update?
Activate the food freeze before or when the shutdown notice has appeared and then extend the food freeze for another hour or two after the update is complete. It's not foolproof but should get the job done.

no but if you cannot send attacks 5 mins beforehand

The real problem with attacks on players is that they continue traveling during the down time.  Funny thing is, that an attack on say nomads during a downtime doesn't happen, and your troops just magically show up at your main.  Since the way they shut the servers down, is crudely speaking an interupt, and they use this to stop food, they could just go one step farther, and just stop all travel(if something is X minutes out at shutdown, it's X minute out at restart).  Problem solved.  Won't happen because they're lazy and as a bonus for GGE, launched attacks that can't be defended likely lead to more purchases, so win, win for them.
