I recommend adding cavalry units and allowing players to use them to ride out and meet an advancing army in the field rather than hiding inside castles waiting for the attack to come.  Other players could also intercept attacks destined for alliance member's castles.  This would add a whole new dynamic to the game and allow players to avoid unit losses/fires in their castles if they were willing/could afford to keep a cavalry on-hand.  It would also allow for the creation of new buildings and even things like "stable masters" which would give bonuses to the cavalry.

I would also like to see NPCs mount better attacks.  I am level 65 and I get attacked by level 2 Robber Barons.  This isn't even fun.  Hit me with something bigger...allow the game to create a "rivalry" or "war" between me and the Robber Baron or Desert tower, etc that I constantly attack.  In other words, make the NPCs more relevant.  Right now, they are just targets for me to hit when I feel like it.  Make there be a cost to my constant hitting of an NPC, just like there would be if I hit real players.
