You seem to be on the right track. Read as many forum threads as you can....this is a great way to not only get a feel for how to play and receive helpful tips, but you also learn a little about the politics and inter-alliance dealings.
When you feel ready, search the Alliance recruitment thread, research the alliance that best fits your play style, and petition to join. Once there, (if you find a good one), the players should be more than happy to help guide you.
