Welcome to the game, Wulffie.
Searching through the forum threads is the best way to get acquainted with the game. This will also help you find those players that are experienced, knowledgeable and willing to help.
After you get a good feel for the game, and decide it's worth your time to play, I would recommend researching the alliances and finding one that best suits your game play syle.
